I only half-jest when I say that this problem could be solved in 2 minutes by locking Lynn Ahrens, Bob Dorough, Dave Frishberg and Jack Sheldon in a recording studio and asking them to come up with a SchoolHouse Rock song that explains the importance of the right to free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. An entire generation, maybe two, remembers most of the Preamble to the US Constitution in song thanks to Lynn Ahrens.
While I'm disturbed by this news report, I'm not overly disturbed-- and here's why: most high schools are mini-police states. Maybe a poll of college sophomores-- kids who have graduated high school and spent a year in a college environment, which tends to be a lot more like real life and yet nothing like it all at the same time, might have a greater appreciation of the importance, relevance and dare I say sanctity of the First Amendment.
Of course, that could just be wishful thinking on my part.
